Pope Francis has deemed Sunday, July 25 the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. In light of this, the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life has released a message from Pope Francis for the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. The message can be found by clicking here.
The theme is “I am with you always” (cf. Mt 28:20), which conveys the closeness of God and the Church to the elderly and emphasizes the intergenerational closeness between the young and the elderly.
On July 25 let us remember our grandparents and the elderly and the wisdom an experience that they bring to the life of our Church.

for the comfort of Your presence:
even in times of loneliness,
You are my hope and my confidence,
You have been my rock and my fortress since my youth!
I thank You for having given me a family

Here is how your gifts and donations help others: "A parishioner brought a bag of lovely items from a friend who was sorting through the possessions of her deceased mother. I could see how well the mother had cared for them, and I will be able to find homes where they will bring comfort, inspiration, hope, and expression of faith.”

Several weeks ago after giving a lecture at a religious conference, the first question from the audience was this one: How can you continue to stay in a church that played such a pivotal part in setting up and maintaining residential schools for the indigenous people of Canada? How can you stay in a church that did that?
The question is legitimate and important. Both in its history and in its present, the church has enough sin to legitimize the question. The list of sins done in the name of the church is long: the Inquisition, its support for slavery, its role in colonialism, its link to racism, its role in thwarting women’s rights, and its endless historical and present compromises with white supremacy, big money, and political power. Its critics are sometimes excessive and unbalanced, but, for the most part, the church is guilty as charged.
However, this guilt isn’t unique to the church. The same charges might be leveled against any of the countries in which we live. How can we stay in a country that has a history of racism, slavery, colonialism, genocide of some of its indigenous peoples, radical inequality between its rich and its poor, one that is callous to desperate refugees on its borders, and one within which millions of people hate each other? Isn’t it being rather selective morally to say that I am ashamed to be a Catholic (or a Christian) when the nations we live in share the same history and the same sins?
Still, since the church is supposed to be leaven for a society and not just a mirror of it, the question is valid. Why stay in the church? There are good apologetic answers on this, but, at the end of the day, for each of us, the answer has to be a personal one. Why do I stay in the church?
First, because the church is my mother tongue. It gave me the faith, taught me about God, gave me God’s word, taught me to pray, gave me the sacraments, showed me what virtue looks like, and put me in contact with some living saints. Moreover, despite all its shortcomings, it was for me authentic enough, altruistic enough, and pure enough to have the moral authority to ask me to entrust my soul to it, a trust I’ve not given any other communal entity. I’m very comfortable worshipping with other religions and sharing soul with non-believers, but in the church in which I was raised, I recognize home, my mother tongue.
Second, the church’s history is not univocal. I recognize its sins and openly acknowledge them, but that’s far from its full reality. The church is also the church of martyrs, of saints, of infinite generosity, and of millions of women and men with big, noble hearts who are my moral exemplars. I stand in the darkness of its sins; but I also stand in the light of its grace, of all the good things it has done in history.
Finally, and most important, I stay in the church because the church is all we’ve got! There’s no other place to go. I identify with the ambivalent feeling that rushed through Peter when, just after hearing Jesus say something which had everyone else walk away from him, Peter was asked, “do you want to walk away too?” and he (speaking for all the disciples) replied: “We’d like to, but we have no place else to go. Besides we recognize that, despite everything, you still have the words of everlasting life.”
In essence, Peter is saying, “Jesus, we don’t get you, and what we get we often don’t like. But we know we’re better off not getting it with you than going any place else. Dark moments notwithstanding, you’re all we’ve got!”
The church is all we’ve got! Where else can we go? Behind the expression, I am spiritual, but not religious (however sincerely uttered) lies either an invincible failure or a culpable reluctance to deal with the necessity of religious community, to deal with what Dorothy Day called “the asceticism of church life”. To say, I cannot or will not deal with an impure religious community is an escape, a self-serving exit, which at the end of the day is not very helpful, not least for the person saying it. Why? Because for compassion to be effective it needs to be collective, given the truth that what we dream alone remains a dream but what we dream with others can become a reality. I cannot see anything outside the church that can save this world.
There is no pure church anywhere for us to join, just as there is no pure country anywhere for us in which to live. This church, for all its checkered history and compromised present, is all we have. We need to own its faults since they are our faults. Its history is our history; its sin, our sin; and its family, our family – the only lasting family we’ve got.

CCCB Permanent Council Responds to Saskatchewan “Catholic TRC Healing Response Appeal”
Recently the Bishops of Saskatchewan began an appeal to show support and raise funds for survivors of Residential Schools. To read more about this initiative click here. The Permanent Council of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has acknowledged this initiative and released a statement late last week to express their support.
The Council is also considering what actions Canadian bishops can do in their local dioceses as well as a national body of bishops. To read the statement please click here or go to www.cccb.ca .
Locally, Archbishop Dunn hopes to gather later this summer with members of the Mi’kmaq communities in our diocese. He wants to listen and learn from the Mi’kmaq what actions the diocese can do to support and provide pastoral care for the local First Nations communities in Halifax-Yarmouth.

Ordination to the Priesthood:
Deacon Patrick Salah

On August 21, 2021 at 10:00am at Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, Archbishop Brian Dunn will ordain Reverend Mr. Patrick Salah to the priesthood. Deacon Patrick completed his studies at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto this past May. He was born and raised in Halifax and grew up in Saint Benedict Parish in Clayton Park.
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions in-person attendance at the ordination will be by invitation only. The faithful are encouraged to “join” the celebration by livestream. The link to the livestream broadcast will be on diocesan website, www.halifaxyarmouth.org, closer to the ordination in August.
Mark your calendar and please keep Deacon Patrick in your prayers as he continues to give his “yes” to the Lord and prepares to be ordained a priest.

Due to the current gathering limitations these outdoor Masses will have limited attendance. Attendees are asked to please bring their own chair. These Masses will also be available via livestream. The links for each Mass will be made available closer to their August dates.
In the event of rain, the masses will be at Saint Agnes Church - August 14 and Saint John Vianney - August 19.
Holy Cross Cemetery Tours
Beginning Monday, July 19, the Catholic Cemeteries of Halifax is pleased to once again offer free tours of historic Holy Cross Cemetery located at South Park St. in Halifax.
The tour will explore the gravesites of the various local and national historical figures who have been laid to rest in the cemetery, including a former premier of Nova Scotia as well as victims of the Halifax Explosion. The tour also includes the story of “chapel built in a day”, Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel, that is found at Holy Cross.
Tours will be offered Monday to Friday at 11:00am and 2:00pm. No tours will be offered on rainy days. The tours are free and donations are gratefully accepted.

Archbishop Dunn has invited the faithful to renew their devotion to Saint Joseph. The Holy Father designated this year a Year of Saint Joseph to encourage the faithful to learn more about the spouse of the Blessed Mother and foster father of Jesus. Church Attendance Update
We are now in Phase 4 of the provincial government's reopening plan. In Phase 4 the maximum number of participants for faith gatherings increases but all other Covid protocols remain. Please continue to register, sanitize, wear masks and sit where assigned by the ushers and to remain seated until directed by an usher to leave. Do not come to Mass if you have any symptoms of Covid or if you are feeling unwell. The next phase - Living with Covid - is expected to deploy in September.
In-person Masses resumed the weekend of July 3 / 4. All the same Covid protocols still apply. Pre-registering for Mass makes it easier for everyone, so please follow your church community's procedure for registering for Mass. Each new Parish must have a plan for evangelization with a commitment to a particular program of evangelization. Significant time, energy, and resources should be invested in reaching the various audiences of the new evangelization: those who have never heard the Word of God, those who have heard the Word of God but fallen away, and those who have heard the Word of God yet require ever deepening conversion”

Mary Crooks, who leads this Ministry, tells the Bulletin, "Often, someone will come to me looking for a certain item, such as a Bible, and I will have it for them due to the generosity of others. Sometimes people bring religious items that belonged to their parents and they want me to find a good home for them. The Holy Spirit has a great way of matching a gift with the right person."If you have extra Bibles, Catholic books, rosaries, crucifixes, holy cards, statues, greeting cards, or religious items, please contact Mary Crooks at 902-825-6495 who will add them to our library or make them available to others.
